We expect a lot from our counselors! Our summer counselors are…

Passionate, dynamic and fun

We look for counselors who have a contagious enthusiasm for life and the world around them, and who are able to create fun, amazing moments regardless of the situation. A Camp Kahili counselor is energetic and able to work long hours with a smile, while providing our campers with the experience of a lifetime.

Committed to Camp Kahili campers

A successful Camp Kahili counselor is able to connect with every individual camper in a program while creating rapport with the group as a whole. They are able to drive Camp Kahili’s mission and make every trip unique and tailored to the group they are leading.

Experienced and culturally aware travelers

Our  counselors are comfortable engaging with local cultures and forming meaningful connections with the people and places they go. They are naturally curious and have the ability to share a sense of discovery with their campers.

Flexible, responsible and resourceful

We hire counselors who can adapt to fast-paced environments and scenarios, find solutions quickly, make the best decisions for their group’s current circumstances and remain flexible when something is outside of their control. Our trips are carefully programmed, but some things cannot be predicted or planned for – and often, when framed properly, spontaneous moments can be the most memorable part of a trip.

Competitive Staff Selection & Hiring Process

We seek counselors who are dedicated to upholding the highest level of safety. Every staff member in our programs is certified in CPR and first aid, and must complete our rigorous screening of personal interviews, reference checks, and criminal background checks.

We pride ourselves on finding the most unique individuals who…

  • Have a demonstrated passion for educating and working with teens
  • Serve as positive role models in their community
  • Demonstrate excellent leadership skills
  • Love to have fun and know how to get everyone involved
  • Are responsible, social, empathetic, and caring

Thorough Training and Preparation

After being selected as a summer camp counselor, summer camp director, or other summer staff member, all staff will attend mandatory in-person training sessions, ranging from one week for summer camp directors and up to three days for summer camp counselors. Written manuals with detailed policies and procedures are reviewed, and additional role-playing exercises reinforce our safety protocols. This ensures that all staff are well-versed in our philosophy, policies, and procedures and are ready to provide a well-supervised and fun-filled summer program.
